The Capital Area Greenbelt, a beloved 20-mile trail encircling Harrisburg, is a lifeline for outdoor enthusiasts, commuters, and families alike. For over a century, this historic corridor has connected neighborhoods, parks, and waterways, offering a respite from urban life. Yet recently one section of the trail near the PennDOT driver license center in south Harrisburg had to be rerouted – leaving a broken link in an otherwise seamless route.
The Capital Area Greenbelt Association (CAGA) invites users, the community, our neighbors, and the visitors to the Capital region to join us in our project to “Buckle the Belt.”
A Goal to Meet
New development on private property near the PennDOT building has made a reroute of the Greenbelt necessary. A temporary detour is in place, but because it follows busy roads instead of a wooded pathway it is less than ideal for cyclists, pedestrians, or families with children.
CAGA, working with local advocates, neighbors and neighborhood groups, civic leaders, and the City, is developing a plan for the needed reroute. The goal is clear: Create a safe, accessible, environmentally sound, and aesthetically pleasing section of the trail that honors its historical significance while meeting modern standards.
To make this vision a reality funding is needed – and lots of it. CAGA is working to secure state and federal grants as a primary funding source and community funding support plays a critical role in their decision-making. CAGA has established goal of $300,000 in community and foundation fundraising – a tangible demonstration of the community’s support for the trail.
Buckle The Belt
A Grassroots Partnership

Buckle the Belt isn’t just about money; it’s about unity. Volunteers spend thousands of hours maintaining and developing the trail – clearing debris, planting native species, and painting murals to beautify our community. Their efforts celebrate Harrisburg’s diverse community and the Greenbelt’s history.
A notable community celebration is the Tour de Belt, a 20-mile family bike ride this year marking its 25th anniversary, which originated as a way to recognize the completion of the original loop trail. Hundreds of riders participate annually, each donating to the cause. For many, it is a chance to witness the areas of the trail that their contributions help transform.
The Greenbelt will be whole again, a testament to what can happen when a community comes together with a shared purpose.
You Can Move the Vision Forward
Community support will assure the success of the south Harrisburg reroute, and its achievement will inspire plans for further improvements along the Capital Area Greenbelt. It’s a reminder that investing in trails isn’t just about recreation; it’s about health, safety, and connection.
And while the Belt is for the moment unbuckled, the spirit of collaboration and community remains unbroken, ready to tackle the next challenge. Your financial assistance is needed and is truly appreciated. Please make a donation today!
