The Capital Area Greenbelt Association (CAGA) would like to inform Greenbelt users of a construction project on the Paxtang Parkway Trail that requires a temporary trail closure and signed on-street reroute.

These improvements are necessary to maintain the long-term safety, functionality, and sustainability of the trail corridor.

🚧 What’s Happening

Beginning January 6, 2026, construction will take place along a section of the Paxtang Parkway Trail between the Market St Gate and the Derry Street Gate. The construction zone starts at the Market St Gate and runs for 0.4 mi. The remainder of the trail will be open for use.

Work will include:

  • Placement of a new 12-foot trail surface, with 4-foot grass shoulders on both sides
  • Replacement of the culvert under the trail
  • Replacement of the Kline Plaza sewer line under the trail
  • New timber rail fencing and gate

Trail Access:

  • Closure is limited to the active construction area
  • A posted detour is in place at both trail entrances
  • Please respect all physical barriers and signage during construction

This work is being performed to address aging infrastructure and to ensure the trail remains safe and accessible for years to come.

Construction Timeline

  • Start Date: January 6, 2026

  • Expected Completion: May 4, 2026

Trail closures will be limited to active construction areas, but users should expect access restrictions throughout the project duration.

Temporary Detour Route

During construction, a signed, on-street detour will be in place for cyclists, walkers, and runners traveling through the area.

  • The detour routes users around the closed section using nearby neighborhood streets.

  • Detour signage is posted along the route in both directions.

  • A detailed map and turn-by-turn directions are available on this page and at trail access points.

Please allow a few extra minutes for travel through the detour area and use caution at all street crossings.

Respect the Closure & Follow the Signs

For everyone’s safety, it is critical that all Greenbelt users respect the trail closure:

  • Do not enter closed sections of the trail

  • Do not move barricades or signage

  • Follow posted detour and warning signs at all times

Construction zones include heavy equipment, open excavations, and unstable surfaces that pose serious safety risks. Ignoring closures not only puts users at risk, but can also delay the project and increase costs.

Thank You for Your Patience

CAGA appreciates the patience and cooperation of the Greenbelt community during this important improvement project. Temporary inconveniences allow us to preserve and improve the trail system that so many people enjoy every day.

If you have questions about the project or the detour, please contact us or check back here for updates as construction progresses.

Thank you for helping keep the Greenbelt safe, accessible, and thriving.
