On Friday, September 6, 80 volunteers descended on the Capital Area Greenbelt to volunteer their time
as part of the United Way of the Capital Region’s annual Day of Caring initiative, an opportunity for
people to donate their efforts to help local nonprofit organizations complete projects.
Broken into five groups, the volunteers from local businesses worked diligently on an array of
trail maintenance tasks:
About 12 volunteers from PPL Electric Utilities and Asplundh removed branches and trees along the Greenbelt that posed potential issues to the trail’s well-being.
20 volunteers from PPL Electric Utilities and Capital Blue Cross worked to remove vines growing on trees near Penbrook and Paxtang Parks.
30 volunteers from Penn National Insurance worked in the Memorial Tree Garden to weed and spread mulch around 75 trees. They also pruned dead branches, trimmed shrubs, and picked up trash and clippings for disposal.
Approximately 12 volunteers from Delta Dental removed invasive species of plants at the Five Senses Gardens.
6 workers from Phoenix Contact were tasked with the removal of the bottom row of fence boards near Veterans Park.
A volunteer-led each group from the Capital Area Greenbelt Association (CAGA), including Tim
Poole, Becky Schuchert, Mike Krempasky, Cindy Hogeman, and Doug Knauss, respectively. Diane Kripas
of the CAGA board of directors managed the overall coordination of the event.
CAGA would like to sincerely thank all Day of Caring volunteers for their time, and effort, and the United
Way of the Capital Region for organizing this much-appreciated yearly event.
